What Is Foot Reflexology?

Foot Reflexology stands as a therapeutic practice that intertwines ancient Chinese wisdom with the principles of holistic healing. Rooted in the belief that the feet serve as a microcosm of the entire body, this ancient art aims to restore balance and harmony within the body’s energy channels, known as meridians.

In TCM philosophy, the feet are viewed as a reflection of the body’s internal organs and systems, with specific points on the feet corresponding to different areas of the body. Foot Reflexology leverages the notion that applying pressure to these reflex points can stimulate the flow of vital energy, or Qi, and facilitate the body’s natural healing processes.

Foot reflexology seek to identify and address imbalances within the body’s energy flow, promoting overall well-being and vitality. Foot Reflexology not only targets physical ailments but also addresses the emotional and mental aspects of health, recognizing the interconnectedness of the mind, body, and spirit.

How Does Foot Reflexology Help In Pain Management?

Foot Reflexology is a good complementary treatment for certain conditions such as foot and calf pain – almost half of the body’s meridians start or end on the foot and these meridians pass through the calves and thighs and even on the other parts of the body. Also, application of pressure on certain points on the foot promotes better blood circulation both locally and for the whole body as well.

How Is Foot Reflexology Done?

After having the feet cleaned, the patient is seated, and pressure is applied to the feet, ankle and the calves during the treatment. The pressure may be applied in sweeping motions across the muscles and other soft tissues, occasionally putting emphasis at certain points that have an overall healing effect on the body. During the treatment the patient may feel some soreness when pressure is applied, but should not feel overbearing pain.

What Should I Expect After the Treatment?

The patient should feel relaxed after the treatment particularly at the foot and calf area. For more prolonged benefits (e.g. pain relief, better health management), it is advisable to combine Foot Reflexology with other TCM treatment. Foot Reflexology is a treatment that can be done on a regular basis, multiple times a week for those who are used to receiving pressure on the foot.

Is Foot Reflexology Suitable For Me?

Foot Reflexology is suitable for almost everyone, except for pregnant women, those with skin conditions or major cuts at the foot area that may affect the treatment process, and those with allergies to topical cream.
