TCM view

When the circulation of blood or essential energy (Qi) in the Liver is slowed, blood flow is slowed in the uterus, thereby causing painful congestion of circulation.

Western view

Women with more severe period pains are believed to produce more prostaglandins. These hormones promote contractions of the uterus. The more prostaglandins you produce, the stronger your contractions.
