HEADACHE/MIGRAINE CAUSES
TCM view
From the perspective of Traditional Chinese Medicine, headache/migraine is caused by:
- Qi and Blood Stasis: Blocked Qi and blood flow results in sharp, localized pain, often with throbbing sensations, dry skin, painful pressure points, and dark menstrual flow in women.
- Liver Fire: Excess heat in the Liver causes intense, throbbing headaches, dizziness, red eyes, dry mouth, irritability, and insomnia, triggered by stress, anger, or heat.
- Kidney deficiency: Kidney Yin deficiency often due to menopause or hormonal imbalances, can lead to headache/migraine with dizziness, tinnitus, and blurred vision. Kidney Yang deficiency may cause headache/migraine with cold sensations, fatigue, and pale complexion.
Western view
A headache is caused by signals interacting between the brain, blood vessels, and surrounding nerves. An unknown mechanism activates specific nerves responsible for affecting muscles and blood vessels in the brain.
