Iontophoresis

“I need sleep.” “I’m very stressed.” I’m sure we’ve uttered those words or variations of it every now and then. When it comes to reducing stress and getting a good night's sleep quality, there are a plethora of options and combinations that you can try.

If you have found a solution that works for you, you probably won’t be here in the first place. But for those who are still struggling to get some shut-eye, perhaps turning to eastern medicine could help. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, herbs are not used only for treating illnesses, they are also helpful in allowing the body to rest and reenergize. And no, you don’t have to swallow some bitter concoction, instead, all you have to do is sit back and relax.

What is Iontophoresis?

Iontophoresis (ahy-on-tuh-Fuh-ree-sis) is a form of transdermal drug delivery (TDD) that utilises gentle electrical current to drive or push ionized drugs through the skin’s outermost layer.

This might be your first-time hearing about iontophoresis, but this technology was conceptualised way back in the mid-18th century – but it wasn’t until the 19th century that this concept was actualised by 5 notable doctors and researchers. Iontophoresis is an effective treatment for hyperhidrosis or excessive sweating.

Aside from treating hyperhidrosis, iontophoresis has been used for pain management – administering medication for patients with plantar fasciitis, tendonitis, rheumatoid arthritis, and other musculoskeletal conditions. By using this method, the dosage is reduced, resulting in a lower risk of side effects. Using iontophoresis in administering medications has the advantage of preventing the first-pass effect, a metabolic process in the digestive system that reduces the effectiveness of the medication.

So What is Herb Ionto?

Pain care specialists at Singapore Paincare and board-certified TCM physicians collaborated on the idea of incorporating the iontophoresis machine with Chinese medicinal herbs. Herb Ionto is a relaxing foot soak treatment that uses a gentle electric current to enhance absorption of specially concocted herbs that serves as the first dose of medication to kickstart the patient’s healing and restore the qi and blood circulation.

Board-certified TCM physician Sue Wan highlighted that there’s an increasing need for boosting immunity, combating fatigue, and easing sleep problems since the pandemic started. Together with other notable physicians and specialists, they developed 3 Herb Ionto programmes that specifically target sleep problems, immune deficiency and fatigue.
